چکیده

The introduction of definite and simple action goals into machine vision at an early stage promises to address the defects which have become apparent in the data-driven reconstructionist paradigm, with its relentless emphasis on accurate geometric recovery of the whole 3D scene — a reconstruction which is often unnecessary and usually too difficult. Simple goals allow a more precise definition of what is salient in the scene for the particular task in hand, in turn indicating what image data are relevant, and allowing the sensors to be directed to view the important parts of the scene. One benefit of having control over where and how the scene is observed over time is that tasks which are ill-posed in the static case may become well-posed [1]. A second is that finite computational resources can be allocated where they are needed, and yet a third is that passive vision becomes an active pointing device. Such purposive and active vision promises to open up exciting new avenues of experiment, in which the researcher has to relinquish precise control over scene conditions and the behaviour of the vision system. But to reach this experimental Elysium, the vision researcher needs apparatus; not only an accurate mechanical device to steer the cameras, but also a high bandwidth closed-loop vision sensor and controller. He immediately encounters other significant problems more familiar to control engineers: What is an appropriate mechanism? How can the time/speed requirements of the task be met? What is the control state, and observer and control law? And so on. In this paper we outline the design considerations behind our construction of a steerable stereo head/eye platform, the mechanical design and that of the gaze controller and vision systems. We show how the kinematics of the platform can be used to relate image measurements with the scene motion in a static frame.

Automatic Detection and Tracking of Human Heads Using an Active Stereo Vision System

A head tracking system for automatically detecting and tracking human heads in complex backgrounds is developed. In this paper, two issues are addressed: the detection of human heads and the development of a head tracking system. First, based on an elliptical model for the human head, we propose a Maximum Likelihood (ML) detector to reliably locate human heads in images having complex backgroun...

An World-Independent Approach for the Calibrat'ion of Mobile Robotics Active Stereo Heads

This paper describes an approach for calibrating active stereo heads for which no prior knowledge of the world coordinate system is required. During an automated procedure derived from this approach, the mobile robot can be loosely positioned in front of a calibration pattern. Through our procedure, both the camera calibration and the neck-eye calibration are obtained. With this set of calibrat...

A Preliminary Study on Webcam-based Navigation of Transcranial magnetic stimulation

In this preliminary study, we utilized the Webcam with bigger field of view (FOV) in order to overcome existing limitations of conventional navigation stereo cameras with small FOV thereby improving marker detection capacity. In results, we demonstrated that FOVs of conventional camera and the Webcam were 885 mm and 1,685 mm, respectively which indicates better FOV of the Webcam. Consequently, ...

Insight into the actin-myosin motor from x-ray diffraction on muscle.

The origin of reflections in the x-ray diffraction pattern from striated muscle and their use for understanding the structural organization of the contractile machinery are presented and discussed. Results of x-ray diffraction experiments obtained by a number of research groups using a variety of protocols revealed structural changes in contracting muscles which are interpreted in terms of mole...

Real-time passenger counting in buses using dense stereovision

We are interested particularly in the estimation of passenger flows entering or exiting from buses. To achieve this measurement, we propose a counting system based on stereo vision. To extract three-dimensional information in a reliable way, we use a dense stereo-matching procedure in which the winner-takes-all technique minimizes a correlation score. This score is an improved version of the su...
